AI Can Make You Look Perfect on Paper - Here is What Gets You the Job
Let's be honest: AI has made the job search a lot easier. In a few minutes, you can tailor your resume to a job description, polish every bullet, and hit every keyword a hiring team could dream up. It's a great tool, and we're not here to tell you to stop using it.
But here's what we're seeing on the recruiting side: when everyone looks perfect on paper, paper stops being the deciding factor. More and more, the hire comes down to the things a resume can't capture. So how do you stand out when every resume looks flawless? Here are four things to keep in mind.
1. Lead With What AI Can’t Replace
Executive support is one of the most personal working relationships in any organization. An executive isn't just hiring a skill set. They're handing over their calendar, their inbox, their priorities, and often their family and personal life (no pressure).
The qualities that matter most in that relationship rarely show up in a bullet point:
- How you communicate under pressure
- How you handle confidential information
- How quickly you read and adapt to someone's working style
- Your judgment when there's no clear “right" answer
- How naturally you fit into the team’s pace and culture
These come through in conversation. That's why recruiters are spending more time on the phone and on Zoom getting to know candidates, and why your interview smatter more than ever.
2. Don't Let AI Write a Version of You That Doesn't Exist
AI is great at tightening your wording. It's not great at telling the truth about you. It's easy to let a tool describe skills you haven't fully used or stretch experience into something it wasn't.
Here's the thing: experienced recruiters and executives can see right through it. The moment an interview question goes one layer deeper than the resume, the gaps show. And in a role built entirely on trust, that's a tough first impression to recover from.
Your resume should sound polished, but it should still sound like you. Our rule of thumb: if you can't speak confidently to every line of your resume in a conversation, it doesn't belong on the page.
3. Lean on Your Recruiter
A job description tells you what a company wrote down. A good recruiter knows what the executive is really looking for: their communication style, what didn't work with their last assistant, the pace of the office, and the unspoken priorities that never make it into a posting.
That's information no AI tool has access to. When you work closely with your recruiter, you walk into the interview prepared for the role as it really is, not just as it's described .So be open with us about your goals, your strengths, and what you want in your next role. The more we know you, the better we can advocate for you and match you with the right executive.
4. Interview Them, Too
It's easy to walk into an interview focused only on proving yourself. But the best placements happen when both sides are a fit.
Use your interview to learn how the executive likes to work, how they give feedback, what success looks like in the first 30 and 90 days, and how the team operates day to day. Pay attention to how they communicate with you, too. A role that looks great on paper isn't worth much if the working relationship isn't right for you.
